Saga Prefecture is located in the northwest part of Kyushu, the southernmost main island of the Japanese archipelago. Karatsu City is located on the western side of Saga Prefecture and is known for its terraced landscape of rice fields.
Terraced fields are the result of a tradition that rewarded farmers who could maximize the potential of Japan’s steep and rugged slopes. Such landscapes used to be much more common, but terraced farms are rapidly disappearing. It is no wonder that the region was chosen as one of the “100 Best Rice Terraces of Japan.”
In the fall, the areas footpaths are lined with blooming red spider lilies. The beauty is overwhelming.
