If you're itching for adventure, the Hozugawa river boat ride could be just for you. The 16-kilometer trip from Tamba-Kameoka to Arashiyama in Kyoto is an adrenaline rush from start to finish. Expect to get wet as you bump along and also be prepared for encounters with rocks along the way.
The ride is certainly impressive through Hozugawa Ravine, with its massive boulders, deep pools and lush greenery. On the way, you can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains and also the proximity to nature in the form of birds and other wildlife.
In stark contrast to all this nature, though, about an hour into the ride, you may suddenly encounter the red-and-ocher train of the Sagano Scenic Railway passing overhead. And its passengers are almost guaranteed to give a hearty wave to the river travelers below.
The Hozugawa is beautiful in all seasons, though autumn is my personal favorite. It calls itself the best river boat ride in Japan, and it's hard to disagree. If you want to spend two hours of fun and excitement in natural surroundings, this trip is certainly for you.
